The Los Angeles County Museum of Arts visits Alcott E.S.
Recently, Alcott Elementary students got the opportunity to travel back in time. The Los Angeles County Museum of Arts (LACMA) traveling classroom recently made a pit stop at the school to give sixth-grade students a unique experience through ancient art history.
Sixth-grade teacher Wendy Garcia submitted an application for LACMA to come to her campus, and was excited when she learned that Alcott students would get the opportunity to learn about the ancient world through hands-on art experiences. "I decided to apply for the grant because it's important for our students to have hands-on experiences in their learning. It's through those experiences that they could find true meaning to the knowledge they have gathered in the classroom," wrote Ms. Garcia.
LACMA's Ancient World Mobile program, which is dedicated to teaching sixth-grade students in LA County, parked its traveling studio at Alcott for a week and taught sixth-graders about art of the ancient world. It concluded with a field trip to the museum, where they were given a full day to explore first-hand what they had learned earlier that week.
Here, students enjoy creating their own piece of history by making replicas of ancient art with clay and other materials.
The Ancient World Mobile program focuses on Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Southeast Asia, and examines the beliefs of early cultures and how those beliefs were communicated through art, and was made possible by a generous grant from BP, and the County of Los Angeles Quality and Productivity Commission.
